Everybody Fucking Panic!!!

Everyone stay calm. We can still win the Big East and go to a BCS bowl game. Who wouldn’t love to get wasted in New Orleans. However, the honeymoon period for Bill Stewart is officially over. I love the man’s positive attitude but if this is the product we will see week after week, he will have a short reign as head coach.

Was it coaching? Maybe. Was it the officials? In the first half, yes. Fact is, we got our ass beat worse that a guy in a gay porn. Our D had more holes than Sonny Corleone in the Godfather. And our team is softer than my belly and it is pretty damn lumpy.

I go back to Bill Stewart’s Fiesta Bowl pre-game speech, “It’s Mountaineer Pride…From the heart.” We had no heart today and I am embarrassed to be a Mountaineer football fan. My prediction for our final record, 9-4. Pat White’s chance of winning the Heisman? 0%

  1. Where’s Robin Williams when I need him to tell me, “It’s not your fault.” ?

  2. Amen

  3. So, when is “Program in Meltdown: WVU” going to be posted?

  4. What 5th year said…it’s time to panic.

  5. What a game changer the blown call on Pat White out of bounds on our first possession. Clearly out of bounds and our rookie coach did not challenge. No the rookie did not. Game changer.

  6. I’ll monitor your site in the coming weeks for the official, “It’s time to Panic.”

Glad it wasn’t todays, although I wonder when that would be.

Could we have lost that game any worse and then got the panic post?

  7. That might have been the single worst game I’ve ever seen the Mountaineers play. All around SHITTY. What the F)&*^ happened? I’m not panicking, i’m in shock.

  8. I’m still numb thinking about that game. We had absolutely no chance to win.

When is the last time a Mountaineer team had absolutely no shot at winning the game from the opening kick-off? VT in 2005?? The last two years we had a shot against USF. We could’ve have beaten Pitt last year. We had a shot against Louisville too. We just got our ass beat today fellas. Man up and bring it against CU or we are fucked

  9. I had a bad feeling going into this. Bad enough that I was secretly hoping Hannah would force a cancellation. Charley will there be a Progam Meltdown post to follow?

  10. Before the game, I heard ol’ sufferin’ succotash Lou Holtz mention that East Carolina looked like an SEC team getting off the bus and it gave me a little chill. I chalked it up to father-son bias, but from the looks of that game, ECU looked like an SEC contender, not a Conference USA champion wanna-be.

My brother and father want to blame the game on the worst officiating since any trip to Virginia Tech prior to 1995, and, while I agree that the officiating was terrible in the first half, the fact is that ECU beat us on both offensive and defensive lines…beat us like we haven’t seen in a few years.

I think the game was lost when White (allegedly) fumbled in the first half. I am still confused by that play. Why wasn’t it challenged? Hell, why wasn’t it reviewed by the booth? And, am I wrong, but I thought the ground can’t cause a fumble…even so, Pat was clearly out of bounds with a hand on the ball…Had that call been reversed, I believe we score there and it is a different game, but still a game we might have lost because you can only allow so many drives where your opponent converts 3rd-and-nine, and then 3rd-and-13, and have a chance to win.

Clearly, I think we are a frontrunning kind of team. We need a lead to play, and playcall, comfortably. The defense will improve, but will it improve enough for us to win the Big East? If we don’t find someone like a Johnny Dingle or a Keilien Dykes that can collapse a pocket, I have my doubts that we can handle the better passing teams in our conference.

Still, I agree. It isn’t time to panic. It just might be time to accept that we might not quite be a legit top-10 team this season. I just hope that a bunch of our fans don’t jump off the bandwagon. We would have had these same problems even if RR were still here. Casteel will do the best he can and here’s hoping it’s good enough to get us to the BCS.

  11. Poor tackling, poor blocking, mental mistakes, and lack of discipline culminated for one of the most embarrassing WVU games in the last 5 years. The coaches didn’t have the players ready and as a result the players did not execute. Let the countdown on Bill Stewart’s coaching career begin because this is too good of a team to get shit kicked at East Carolina. Yup, everybody it’s time to panic.

  12. Yeah, we pretty much sucked. Has the offensive line heard of the concept of blocking? And I know the defense is young, but JEEBUS! They got beaten like a redheaded step-child (apologies to all redheaded stepchildren out there). Pat couldn’t do anything, partly because he couldn’t get on the field. I hope Smilin’ Bill can do better than that.

  13. The last time WVU did not score a single touchdown in any game was back about 7 years ago…I cannot believe what happened yesterday except to say that someone has messed with the offense and needs to take it back to where it was! Coach Stew needs to quit messing with them..Change is good, but not in this case! They barely got past Villanova last week and now this? The team is loaded with talent and stinks! FIX IT NOW!!!

  14. That, my friends, was the ghost the chicken of Rich Rod attitudes past coming home to roost. Hopefully it will be the last time we see that fucker.

Last year, WVU so thoroughly smeared ECU’s face in defeat we should’ve known they were going to pour everything they had into this game. Really. Remember the calls of unsportsmanlike running up the score by keeping the starters in and scoring long after the game was clearly won? We basically swatted a wasp and forgot to watch out for it to retaliate.

Oh, well. WVU never plays top dog well. Every time we’re sitting pretty, we drive ourselves into an underdog status.

Last time the team and the fans were both this disappointed about falling apart in a game (Pitt last December), the Eers treated us to one of our most spectacular games ever (Fiesta Bowl) the next time they stepped in front of a scoreboard.

  15. Offensive play calling was terrible. Running scheme is terrible. No running plays inside the tackles with a leading blocker (i.e. fullback). Devine has to have a leading blocker to run inside, and inside is where you will get most of the yards.

Is White really a bad thrower, or was ECU that good at covering receivers?

  16. Mulling on Mullen

“I hope I am proven completely wrong, but blind optimism isn’t in my repetoire when a first time offensive coordinator is changing the best offense in Mountaineer history.

I refuse to use revisionist history are act like just because Rich Rodriguez is a scumbag and blew the biggest game in his career, that his offense was too predictable. It was predictable all the way to 3 straight 11 win seasons and 40 points per game.”

  17. The offense was never the problem with Fraud, it was his play calling in key games.

The more I think about it, the more I am worried. In years past after a loss I felt confident we would come out next week and dominate. Now, I have no faith in this coaching staff until they prove they can do something other recruit. We don’t want a Dave Mustache.

  18. The blame can be spread all around, gentle. I think its silly how the group getting the most of the backlash is the coaching staff, but the fact is that our defense is greener than the turf they play on and the offense didnt execute. Our #1-in-the-nation O-line got pushed around like the D&D kid in gym class. We didnt throw the ball past the 1st down marker and when Pat did the ball was dropped. Special teams seemd to be okay, but I was too appalled by the other 2 units to pay much attention.

ECU was the all-around better team yesterday. Plain and simple.

  19. Uhh…that was suppposed to be gentlemen*….

  20. I also wanted to note the questionable call by the refs in the 1st quarter(You know which one Im talking about.) Hard to say whether or not that was a fumble, but someone should have called for a damn challenge. What the hell? Also…that QB sneak…That was one hell of a generous spot!

Now Im not saying either of these things would have helped us win the game if they went differently…but its possible it could have helped us win the game if they had gone differently.

On the drive with the so-called “fumble”, we were moving the ball pretty well. The offense seemed excited and confident and then that happens. If we dont turn it over there I think we go down and score and we get down 10-0….and the offense would have been highly motivated with good field position. If those drives had gone our way we could have been tied up 7-7 or even up by a touchdown.

Even if youre down…its a lot easier to put up a 4th quarter fight on both sides of the ball if youre down 24-14 than it is if youre down 24-3.

Still…it matters not. There are going to be bad calls in every game. Good teams overcome them.

  21. Same players on offense different coaches. Different offensive results. I think the cause of the blame is pretty obvious.

  22. Looking forward to the program meltdown: WVU post

  23. Steve Kragethorpe…

  24. They played like shit. Teams ocassionaly do that. If we lose 4 games this season, somthing is wrong. If we win 11, well, we just played like shit.

  25. I was seething quietly, then I saw this:

    >>Stewart knew it was bad, but he wasn’t about to point fingers or begin ripping his players.

“I’m not going to go in and call them dirty, filthy, vulgar names. If that’s what people want, they better put me somewhere else,” Stewart said.<<

    http://www.timeswv.com/wvu_sports/local_story_251020917.html

So, now I’ll seethe out loud.

I am sooooo glad that Stewart is concentrating on the real issue — whether or not the players’ feelings are being hurt. In seriousness, though, he’s gotta realize that jabs at RichRod aren’t going to be winning him any points now — right? How about focusing on getting your team ready to win against Colorado, instead of spending your time reminding everyone how you’re more of a gentleman than your predecessor? “Vulgar”? Seriously? News flash: I don’t care if you know which forks to use for salads and entrees. I -do- care if you can’t get your team to compete.

The 25314 has it right: same players (more or less) on offense, different coaches. The last time we couldn’t score a TD it was against a defense that had (amongst others) Ed Reed, DJ Williams, Phillip Buchanon, and Jonathan Vilma. ECU’s D was good; it didn’t have a single guy of that caliber. And for all the bloviating about how much more flexible and creative the playcalling was going to be, it looked more uninspired and confused than McGee’s worst day.

It’s also time to retire the Stewart/Coker comparison. Coker won out his first two years (PI, my ass).

I’d like to have a better sense of what’s happened at S&C since Barwis left. It’s hard to blame the D for looking gassed — they were on the field the whole time — but the vaunted O-line looked awful. Just awful. Neither punch nor cohesion.

I guess we’ll know more after next week.

  26. Understood the D was a problem, and we did expect it, particularly in the secondary.

O line was awful, or awfully coached. Reminded me of the pitt game, you got the impression that linebackers were lining up on our side of the ball, they were in Pat’s face so fast.

also, it’s hard to break habits, and Pat is used to running if trouble is coming, regardless of what the line is planning.

Only 24 points for as bad as the offense was? not that bad, really. Remember when the other team felt the pressure to score?

  27. The 800000.00 a year bargain coach questions I must ask ? Win the coin toss and chose to defer and put the very green and vunerable defense on the field first in a hostile enviroment. Game was over after their opening drive. We needed to put pressure on them from the get go. No challenge on the fumble ? Idont get that at all. Six seconds left in half with all the so called speed we have and we kneel on the ball ? Why not take a shot down field ? I know Jeff Casteel is d-cooridinator but that effort yesterday was a classic Steve Dunlap defense from the days of old. I am hurt, I love West Virginia and want to see one national championship before I die. We took a huge step backwards yeaterday. Oh well , basketball is right around the corner and Huggy bear will come to the rescue. Go Mounties

  28. PS,
i just got my AARP card, I am running out of time !!!!!!!
    Jeff

  29. I’m not throwing in the towel just yet. I hate to say this, but were absolutely exposed on national television.

There’s some fixing to be done, and hopefully Stewart and his staff can put back together this team before Colorado.

I still think this is an 8 possibly 9 win team this year. We may not be in that national title hunt, White may not be a Heisman candidate but we can still win the Big East or go to a good bowl.

    Let’s continue to believe.

  30. Im so sick. I dont think I can work all week!

    F@$@% 24-25 spot !

We better cruxh every team now and it starts with Colorado !

  31. I’m having outpatient surgery Monday. After the last 2 days, I’m looking forward to the anesthesia.

  32. Yes, I agree that we should retire the Coker-Stewart comparison – we hired a coach with Sarah Palin-level experience. That’s my new comparison. I just HOPE this was just one bad game. I’ve seen us rebound from bad games befor, hopefully we will here too, but I’m far from confident.

  33. At least my Cowboys destroyed Charlie’s Browns today or I may have jumped off the Ravenel bridge.

  34. Did we ever throw a pass over 10 yards?

  35. hamilton-
shouldn’t that be “Barak Obama” level experience?
    nevermind…I missed the point.

  36. You better leave Palin out of this discussion.

She ahs an 85% approval rating from her fans in Alaska.

And, right now, she is still UNDEFEATED.

  37. Stop talking fucking politics. If there is one thing I hate more than STD’s, it is politics. GEESH

  38. You folks out there who’ve played in college: can they spend the next week just learning how to play football? Never has a weekend off been so important.

Also, did Mullen have ego fever (also called “RRodemia”)? Evidently he DID fix something that wasn’t broken, to disastrous results.

(Guess I’ll leave off any Ron Paul references…)

  39. 5th Year, What if we talk politicians with STD’s?

  40. I wasn’t talking politics … I was busting on Stew.

His approval rating is in the toilet … and he is no longer undefeated.

As for whether or not he has any STD’s??

  41. I am dissappointed, but slightly optimistic. Just slightly. The D is green, it wasn’t a Dunlap D, it was Casteel. Unfortunately our D line is thin and small, it was before this game and is not going to change. I do anticipate them getting better as the season move on. The O looked slow, while everyone is questioning S and C, I believe they were slow bc they had to think too much w new offense. Everyone knows that you are much quicker if your are just reacting rather than think and react. It looked like Pat has been coached to look pass first, when he did run, he was a half second slower bc he was trained to look pass. I think this is a mistake and taking away our biggest weapon. Last year if the pass was covered, Pat was 7 yards upfield bf the backers even looked his way, Saturday, Pat took the extra second to find a receiver, then when he took off, the D was looking for him. Hence, the 4 yard gain, that used to be 17……….or taken to the house. We will see if our “quickness” returns when our players are more comfortable with the new O, but I worry we will rarely see the old scrambling Pat if he continues to look for receivers. That is all I have to say about that.
